Overview
Data redundancy is a condition created within a database or data storage technology in which the same piece of data is stored in two separate places. This can mean two different fields within a single database, or two different locations in multiple software environments or platforms. Whenever data is duplicated, it constitutes data redundancy.
Types of Rhombus Data Storage
There are two types of Rhombus data storage: on-camera storage and Cloud Archived storage. Rhombus security cameras can retain up to 180 days of on-camera, full-motion, and high-definition video, depending on camera model, storage capacity, and recording settings.
We also offer Video Cloud Archiving, which transmits on-camera video data to a secure offsite data center that operates independently of any on-camera video storage. To learn more about cloud storage see our article on Cloud Archiving.
Benefits of Data Redundancy
Rhombus security cameras can provide data redundancy should anything happen to a camera. Listed below are some benefits to using cloud archiving for your Rhombus devices:
- Video data is always stored in two different places: on the device and in our cloud architecture.
- If the data is backed up in the cloud and a camera or site gets disconnected from the internet, historical footage is still accessible.
- If you are accessing footage over WAN or off-site, the footage will be accessed from the cloud, which reduces the upload bandwidth of the site.
- As with all computer hardware, devices have failures. Often times, clearing the data on a device completely is the best and fastest way to fix the computer. If everything is backed up, this is a non-issue and device maintenance is much easier and cheaper.
