This article will review how to use an RJ45 splitter to connect two devices to a switch.
Why use an RJ45 splitter?
The purpose of using ethernet or RJ45 splitters is to minimize the number of wire runs. It allows you to run a single wire and provide PoE to multiple Rhombus devices. An example would be utilizing the RJ45 to provide PoE to an A100 and R200.
What you will need
- A switch that provides at least 30 watts of power per port.
- One splitter and one combiner (the difference is that splitters have two male ends, and combiners have a male end and a female end). Note: you can also do this with two splitters instead.
- Two RJ45 wires
- The devices you want to connect to PoE
How to set it up
Connect a short male RJ45 wire to the female end of the combiner; in the picture below, it is shown on the right. Then, connect the two devices you want to connect to the combiner.
After, take a longer RJ45 wire and connect it to the combiner on one end and to the splitter on the other end.
Finally, you can connect the splitter to two ports on your switch. And you are all set!
