Overview
This article covers the steps to install a Wiegand reader with the Rhombus Door Controller (DC20). The steps include wiring the reader to the DC20 as well as setting up the device in the Rhombus Console.
Wiegand Protocol
The Wiegand protocol connects card readers and access control systems by transmitting data between devices. When a card is swiped, the system generates a unique binary code representing the card's ID. This code is sent to a controller, which checks it against a database of access permissions.
Wiring a Wiegand Reader to the DC20
- D0 (DATA0): Figure 2 yellow wire, minimum 24 AWG, 300 ft max run.
- D1 (DATA1): Figure 2 light blue wire, 24 AWG, 300 ft max run.
- GND: Figure 2 black wire, solid or stranded, twisted pair, minimum 24 AWG, 300 ft max run.
- +12V: Figure 2 red wire, the 12VDC reader power supplies are rated to 660mA each.
- Terminals [OUT1] and [OUT2] are configurable in Rhombus Console to support LEDs and buzzers.
Note: We recommend you consult the appropriate federal, state, and local authorities for any relevant regulations at the time of installation.

Setup in the Rhombus Console
Add a Wiegand Reader
| 1. Navigate to "Settings," select "Door Controllers," and then click on the controller you wish to configure. |
|
|
|
2. Click "Quick Add" or "Configure" in the "Wiegand Ports" section. Ensure you are configuring the number port corresponding to the physical number port that the reader is connected to on the DC20. Optional: We offer the ability to check if a Red or Green LED is connected. Note: The Rhombus Console does not auto-recognize Wiegand readers, so they must be added manually. |
Assign to a Virtual Door
Assign the Wiegand reader to an existing door by clicking "Edit" below that door, or add the reader to a new door by clicking "Create door."
For more information on configuring a virtual door, see our article on Controller Settings and Access Control Door Configuration.
Delete a Wiegand Reader
| 1. Navigate to "Settings," select "Door Controllers," and then click on the controller you wish to configure. |
| 2. Click "Edit" below the virtual door with the associated Wiegand reader. Click "Deselect" below the Wiegand Reader. |
| 3. Once the reader is no longer associated with the virtual door, the "Delete" option will show up for the reader in the "Ports" location. Click "Delete" to remove the reader. |
