LAN (Local Area Network)
Generally, a LAN is a group of network-capable devices connected in a single location, like an office building or home. It can vary in size, from one device, like a home, to a business with thousands of devices.
A LAN includes routers, firewalls, switches, wireless access points, IoT devices, computers, printers, and cameras. Any electronic hardware that transmits or receives data will communicate over the LAN.
LAN Benefits
The benefit of having network devices on the same LAN is that they can exchange data without communicating with the Internet. This benefit allows you to preserve bandwidth or data usage restrictions set by your ISP.
Viewing Rhombus cameras over the LAN means Internet bandwidth will not be consumed, and the video feed will experience extremely low latencies. If the Internet goes down you can still access the cameras via LAN on either the Mobile App or the Apple TV.

WAN (Wide Area Network)
A WAN is a network of networks. It connects individual LAN networks together. It is named a wide-area network because it traverses outside a single building or large campus to include numerous locations spread across the world.
The Internet is the largest example of a WAN.
Rhombus Console
When viewing a camera on the Rhombus console, you can see how your device is connected to that camera, whether it is LAN or WAN, in the upper right-hand corner as pictured below.
