What is LAN?
LAN or Local Area Network is a group of devices connected together in a single location, like an office building or home. A LAN came to be big or small, going from a network with one device like a home to a business network with thousands of devices on a single network.
What does a LAN consist of?
A LAN is comprised of access points, cables, switches, routers, and other components that enable devices to connect to internal servers, web servers, and other LANs via WAN (Wide Area Network).
What are the benefits of LAN?
The benefits of LAN are the same as those for any group of devices networked together. The devices can use a single Internet connection, share files with one another, view and stream video, and be accessed and even controlled by one another. In terms of the Rhombus, devices that mean no internet bandwidth will be consumed, and the video feed will experience extremely low latencies. If the internet goes down you can still access the cameras via LAN on either the Mobile App or the Apple TV. To view more about bandwidth with Rhombus devices please go here.
What is WAN?
WAN or Wide Area Network is a connection of the LAN networks or other networks that communicate with others. WAN is a network of networks with the internet being the biggest.
What does the WAN router consist of?
A WAN router, also known as an edge router or border router is a device that routes data packets between WAN locations, giving enterprise access to a carrier network.
Rhombus Console
While viewing a single device in the Rhombus console you will see if the camera is in LAN or WAN in the top right-hand corner as pictured below.
